Chikungunya & West Nile Cases Prompt Heightened Vigilance Across France
Paris, France – September 18, 2025 – French health authorities are urging increased caution against mosquito-borne illnesses as cases of both Chikungunya and West Nile fever continue to rise across the country. A joint statement released September 17, 2025, by the Ministry of Health and Public Health France’s health crisis center highlights the ongoing risk of viral circulation and emphasizes preventative measures.
The alert comes amid an “unprecedented context in mainland France,” with 32 confirmed cases of West Nile fever reported as of mid-September, including nine new infections within the past week. Together, officials are focusing on the potential for Chikungunya to spread, particularly in the Antilles and Guyana-territories with established mosquito vector populations year-round-despite currently experiencing lower contamination rates. The Ministry requests travelers to these regions exercise heightened awareness to limit potential transmission.
Chikungunya, characterized by fever and severe joint pain, is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. West Nile fever, carried by Culex mosquitoes, can cause neurological illness and, in rare cases, death. Health authorities are calling for sustained “individual and collective vigilance” to prevent mosquito bites and control mosquito breeding grounds. This includes using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water.
The ministry’s statement underscores the importance of proactive measures as France faces an elevated risk of these mosquito-borne diseases. Continued monitoring and public awareness campaigns are planned to mitigate further spread.
