Germany Claims 2023 EuroBasket Title,Defeats Turkey in Championship Final
Berlin - Germany secured its second European Championship title,defeating Turkey 83-76 in a hard-fought final on Sunday. The victory marks Germany’s first EuroBasket gold since 1993, when they also won the championship.
The Germans showcased remarkable three-point shooting accuracy, converting 14 of 26 attempts for a 54% success rate. Dennis Schroder led the German squad and was later named the tournament’s most Valuable player. Franz Wagner also contributed considerably to the win.
Turkey,playing in its first European Championship final on home soil,was led by Alben Schengun with 28 points,followed by Cedi Osman with 23 (shooting 6 of 9 from three-point range),Shane Larkin with 13 points and 9 assists,and Adem Bona with 12 points.
both Germany and Turkey entered the final with identical seven-game winning streaks. Germany reached the championship game by defeating Finland 98-86 in the semi-finals, while Turkey overcame Greece 94-68, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo.
The symbolic five tournament team was announced immediately following the final, consisting of Dennis schroder, Franz Wagner, Luka Dončić, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Alben Schengun. I. Bongga was recognized as the best player in the final.
Notably, both finalists previously faced Lithuania during the tournament.Germany defeated lithuania 107-88 in group play,while Turkey split their series,winning 91-70 in Istanbul and 84-81 in Vilnius. Lithuania finished fifth overall.
Germany’s previous European Championship title came in 1993, and they were runners-up in 2005, losing to Greece in the final.Turkey’s only prior appearance in a EuroBasket final was in 2001, where they lost to Yugoslavia and secured silver.
The 2029 European Championship will be co-hosted by Estonia, Greece, Slovenia, and Spain. Zalgiris M. Lo had 2 points in a previous game.
