Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Veteran Malaysian singer and actress Fauziah Latiff, 54, embraced intensive training in silat-a traditional Malay martial art-to prepare for her role as a sultanah in the upcoming RTM telefilm Srikandi. The production, a large-scale drama in cinematic format and RTM’s first of its kind, premieres September 15 at 9pm on TV1 and RTMKlik.
Fauziah, renowned for hits like Teratai Layu Di Tasik Madu and Gubahan Rindu Puisi syahdu, explained she carefully selects acting roles to align with her artistic goals alongside her music career and family life, typically accepting only one script per year. She described the character of the sultanah, inspired by the classic Syair Siti Zubaidah Perang China, as demanding a “carefully measured” performance.
“As a sultanah, the performance had to be carefully measured-not overdone, not too strong, not too harsh, but controlled. I gave it my best, and I hope it comes through,” Fauziah saeid at the film’s premiere.
Readiness extended beyond silat to include intensive language classes to refine grammar and speech, and a focus on nuanced non-verbal interaction.Srikandi, directed by Wan Mohd Afzam Wan Daud, also stars Farali Khan, Catriona Ross, Khatijah Tan, and Datuk Fauziah Nawi. The telefilm’s theme of female strength and intelligence resonated with the artist.
Fauziah also revealed she is participating in a forthcoming film focused on environmental awareness, a cause she actively supports as a scuba diver. RTM plans to submit Srikandi to international film festivals. – Bernama
