WWII plane Wreckage, Including US Machine Guns, Recovered from Taiwan Mountain After 80 Years
TAIPEI, taiwan – Remains of a World War II-era aircraft, including five American machine guns, have been recovered from a remote area of taiwans Central Mountains, bringing to light a tragic incident largely forgotten for eight decades. The wreckage was located near Lakuyin Creek, a site within the area known as Sancha Mountain.
The plane, whose origin adn exact crash date remain somewhat obscured by time, went down during inclement weather. President Lai Ching-te highlighted the event on Facebook in August, noting the disaster – dubbed the “Sancha Mountain Incident” – claimed the lives of rescuers including Japanese military police, local indigenous people, and taiwanese from both the southern Fujian and Hakka communities. He emphasized that at the time, distinctions of allegiance were secondary to the urgent need for survival.Recently, Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) dispatched personnel to the crash site. They discovered scattered aircraft parts, including wheels, engines, kettles, skins, and the five machine guns. The MND subsequently transported four of the machine guns to Jiaming Lake tarmac on September 8th via CH-47 transport helicopter. The recovered weaponry is slated for display in a military museum, intended to serve as a lasting reminder of the human cost of World War II. As President Lai stated, those involved in the rescue effort “had to save their precious lives even if they took risks,” a sentiment the MND hopes to convey through this memorialization.
