A World Cup qualifying match between Serbia and England was temporarily halted in Belgrade after a laser pointer was directed at England defender Ezri Konsa during the first half.
The incident occurred in the 38th minute at the Stadion Rajko Mitic, moments after a similar beam was aimed at teammate Reece James as he prepared for a free-kick. Konsa reacted by throwing his head back, appearing to be momentarily blinded by the green light. Referee Clément Turpin promptly paused play and consulted with the fourth official.
Following the brief stoppage, an announcement was made over the stadium’s public address system warning spectators against the use of laser pens and pyrotechnics. England went on to win the match 5-0.
The disruption occurred against a backdrop of political tension within the stadium. Midway through the second half, riot police entered the stands in response to anti-government chants from home supporters, alongside chants relating to Kosovo.
Approximately 15% of the stadium was closed to Serbian fans as a sanction imposed by FIFA due to previous incidents of racist chanting, specifically during a match against Andorra.
The Serbian Football Association (FSS) has been fined over £600,000 by FIFA and UEFA in the past five years for various offenses, highlighting a recurring issue of fan behavior at international matches in the country.
