Finding Focus in Finland: Studies, Wellbeing, and the Appeal of Oulu
The University of Oulu in Finland is attracting international students driven by a desire to apply their expertise to pressing global challenges, and finding a unique blend of academic rigor and quality of life in the process. Two such students, Mia Chen from China and Yomal Fernando from Sri lanka, exemplify this trend.
Chen’s journey began in children’s game growth, where she recognized the significant influence games have on young minds. This realization spurred her to pursue a Master’s degree in Learning, Education and Technology at the University of Oulu, drawn by Finland’s renowned education system. She aims to design interactive learning applications, believing technology can be a powerful tool for engaging and effective education, despite potential distractions. Post-graduation, Chen intends to contribute to the field of educational materials design, merging teaching with technological innovation.Fernando, a medical doctor from Sri Lanka, arrived in Oulu motivated by a passion for disease prevention. He seeks to leverage population-level data to address health issues he witnessed firsthand in his practice, particularly those stemming from lifestyle factors. He is currently enrolled in the Epidemiology and Biomedical Data Science program, attracted by the University of Oulu’s established expertise in utilizing large health datasets. Fernando envisions a future where countries like his can implement digital systems to proactively improve public health, and plans to continue his studies with doctoral research.
Beyond their academic pursuits, both students are embracing the Finnish lifestyle. Chen finds solace and rejuvenation in Oulu’s extensive forests, enjoying activities like blueberry picking and woodland cycling. Fernando, a dedicated cyclist, was specifically drawn to Oulu by its well-developed network of bike paths, purchasing a bicycle promptly upon arrival. He champions cycling as a joyful and healthy mode of transportation, contrasting it with the stress frequently enough associated with driving. Both Chen and Fernando express a desire to remain in Finland after completing their studies, citing not only the quality of their education but also the welcoming environment and the appeal of the natural surroundings. A simple act of kindness – a professor offering assistance to a lost Fernando on his first day – underscored the supportive atmosphere at the University of Oulu, solidifying their positive impression of the city and its community.
