Ryane Clowe Resigns as San Jose Sharks Assistant General Manager
SAN JOSE, CA – September 7, 2025 – Ryane Clowe has resigned from his position as assistant general manager of the San Jose Sharks, the team announced today. Clowe cited personal reasons for his departure after just over a year with the association.
“After a long period of time, I am grateful to Mike [Grier] adn (team president) Jonathan Becher for giving me the opportunity to return to San Jose,” Clowe said in a statement.
Clowe’s decision comes a little more than a year after he left his role as a senior advisor to the New York Rangers’ general manager Chris Drury to join Grier‘s front office in San Jose. His duties with the Sharks included working with the scouting and development staffs, Grier, and fellow assistant general managers Tom Holy and Joe Will, overseeing all aspects of hockey operations.
“I was part of a great organization, a great team that (just finished) making a run in the playoffs,” Clowe said in July 2024, reflecting on his time with the Rangers. “Once I spoke with Mike, and (we) went through it, it was an opportunity that I couldn’t turn down.”
The Sharks have not announced plans to promptly fill the vacancy. San Jose’s training camp is scheduled to begin in less than two weeks, with the regular season opening at home on October 9.
Joe Will, in his 15th season as a Sharks assistant GM and 13th year leading the Barracuda, works closely with Grier on daily departmental functions. tom Holy,in his fourth year as an assistant GM,oversees the Sharks’ analytics department, staff budgeting, and contracts.
Clowe originally played for the Sharks from 2005 to 2013, appearing in 423 regular-season games and recording 271 points with 567 penalty minutes. He also contributed 45 points in 68 playoff games, helping the team reach the Western Conference final in both 2010 and 2011.Traded to the New York Rangers in April 2023, Clowe later signed a five-year, $24.25 million contract with the New Jersey Devils as an unrestricted free agent that same year. His playing career was cut short by concussions during the 2014-15 season.
Following his playing career, Clowe transitioned into a front-office role with the Devils, initially under Lou lamoriello and later Ray Shero. He served as an assistant coach with the Devils from 2016 to 2018 before becoming head coach of the ECHL’s Newfoundland growlers, a position he left midway through the 2018-2019 season due to concussion-related issues. He joined the Rangers as a hockey operations advisor during the 2021-2022 season and was promoted to senior advisor in August 2023.
