U.S. Immigration Raids Target Hyundai-LG Factory, Hundreds Arrested
Atlanta, GA - U.S. authorities have conducted raids at a Hyundai-LG automotive battery factory in Georgia, resulting in the arrest of hundreds of individuals suspected of immigration violations. The operation, carried out by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), underscores a commitment to protecting American jobs and ensuring fair labor practices, officials said.
The raids targeted workers employed by subcontractors at the factory in Bryan County, Georgia. according to Steven Schrank, a special agent with HSI, some detainees had illegally crossed U.S. borders, others entered with work permits, and still others remained in the country after their work visas expired. The arrests have raised concerns in Seoul, with the South Korean government demanding fair treatment of its citizens and expressing anxieties about the impact on investor confidence.
“this action underlines our commitment to protecting jobs for Georgians and Americans, ensuring a level playing field for law-abiding businesses, maintaining economic integrity and protecting employees from exploitation,” Schrank stated. The timing of the raids comes amid heightened scrutiny of labor practices and immigration enforcement under the current governance. The incident also highlights the complex supply chains involved in the rapidly growing electric vehicle battery industry, and the potential for vulnerabilities related to worker status.
