Budanov Warns of Potential Russian Mobilization, despite Past Efforts to Avoid It

Kyiv – Ukraine‘s Chief Intelligence Directorate (GUR) head, Kyrylo budanov, has stated that Russia retains the capacity to mobilize further troops, despite notable efforts to avoid repeating the 2022 partial mobilization.
Budanov highlighted Russia’s attempts to prevent another large-scale mobilization following the initial call-up in 2022, noting the considerable cost and effort Moscow has invested in doing so. Though, he cautioned that this does not eliminate the possibility of a future mobilization.
“Can the Russian Federation mobilize? Maybe, unfortunately, this is a serious threat.it will be painful for the Russian Federation, but it is realistic. And such a threat exists,”
Kyrylo Budanov, Head of the GUR
When questioned about the potential for sending large numbers of conscripts to the front lines, Budanov indicated that such a strategy would be ineffective. He suggested, however, that a mobilization would allow Russia to increase its overall troop numbers, even if those troops were deployed with limited regard for casualties – a grim assessment he described as being ”thrown into the meat [grinder].”
Regarding the likelihood of anti-war protests within Russia should a new mobilization be announced,Budanov expressed skepticism. He acknowledged that public discontent would likely arise, mirroring the reaction to the 2022 mobilization, which prompted a swift attempt to curtail it. However, he believes such internal opposition would not fundamentally alter Russia’s course of action.
“Look, the mood if you start mobilization in society. They will be. And this is what they saw when they did in 2022 and immediately tried to stop it as quickly as possible. But, will this stop, say, a Russian car? No,” Budanov summarized.
