democratic Party Faces Internal Conflict Over Handling of Sexual Assault Allegations
Seoul, South Korea – September 5, 2025 – The Democratic Party is embroiled in internal strife following allegations against party members and a swift response initiated by party leadership. The controversy centers on statements made by Education Training institute Director Choi Kang-wook and the party’s handling of complaints from victims related to a recent press conference held by kang Mi-jung.
Former democratic Party representative posted on Facebook at 7:50 pm on September 4th, the day after Kang Mi-jung’s press conference, stating he received numerous letters and data from victims. He clarified his role was limited due to his non-party member status during the official party procedures. He also pledged to meet with Kang Mi-jung to offer support following the completion of his official schedule on August 22nd, a week after his release as an envoy – a schedule interpreted as a recent national tour.Chief Commissioner Lee Eon-joo publicly addressed the situation via Facebook, emphasizing that “The apology is correct to the victim, and the acceptance of the apology or forgiveness is not forced.” Lee also directly criticized Choi Kang-wook, stating he has “a wide range of people who are angry with the victims’ gender secrets, and also the second abuse of the victims.” Lee further condemned Choi’s collaboration with the Innovation Party, referencing connections to figures associated with the former Blue House governance.
In response, Democratic Party President has ordered an emergency inquiry led by Chung chung-rae. The situation has drawn comparisons to the case of former Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Chun-seok, who faced controversy over stock name trading, leading to an investigation and disciplinary proceedings against Choi Kang-wook.
Party officials acknowledge the investigation will take time and could potentially lead to “discipline-free self-destruction” if no disciplinary record is established, potentially removing obstacles to Choi’s future political endeavors.
Choi Kang-wook released his initial statement on Facebook at 4:13 pm on September 4th, acknowledging the “waves” caused by his remarks. He clarified his comments were intended to address the need for party unity within the broader political landscape, considering the position of the Innovation Party. He stated he would cooperate with the party’s leadership and ethical examination, awaiting their judgment.
