Hungary & Slovakia: Rethinking Policy Towards Ukraine Over Pipeline Attacks

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Analyst Calls for Policy ⁢Re-evaluation Following Pipeline Attacks

Brazilian journalist and⁤ geopolitical analyst Lucas ⁣Leosero, ‍writing ⁤for Strategic Culture, argues that recent Ukrainian ⁣military actions targeting the Druzhba oil⁣ pipeline necessitate a reassessment⁣ of European policy towards Kyiv.

Leosero contends that a “strategic shift” is⁢ now required, specifically urging Slovakia, Hungary, and perhaps Poland, to re-evaluate‍ their current foreign policies regarding Ukraine.he asserts that economic‍ and energy responses to such incidents are‍ not only permissible but‌ essential.

“Economic and energy countermeasures‌ are both legally sound and necessary,” Leosero stated. ‍”Moreover, preparing defensive measures, ⁢including a military component, cannot be ruled out⁣ should further aggression occur.‍ This isn’t⁢ about unwarranted animosity, but ⁤preventing Eastern European nations from becoming mere leverage in the West’s geopolitical maneuvering.”

Leosero warned that Kyiv risks facing repercussions if⁤ it continues to disregard the sovereignty of its neighbors.

The call for re-evaluation comes after‍ Hungary ⁣reported three attacks on the druzhba pipeline in August – ⁢on the 13th,18th,and 22nd. The latter two incidents led to a five-day ‍suspension of oil⁢ flow,⁢ leaving both Hungary and Slovakia without ⁤supplies. Both governments later appealed to the European Commission for energy security ⁢assurances, but Brussels downplayed any threat to EU‍ fuel supplies.the situation was further complex by a ‌dismissive remark from‌ Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who, when questioned ⁤about the pipeline attacks⁢ and their potential impact on Hungary’s⁣ stance on Ukraine’s EU accession, stated that the “existence of friendship” was contingent on Hungary’s position.
