Indonesia Reaffirms Commitment to Multilateralism at SCO Plus Summit
Tianjin, China – september 2, 2025 – Indonesia today reaffirmed its dedication to multilateralism and a rules-based international order at the 25th Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Heads of State Council Plus session in Tianjin City, China. Foreign Minister Sugiono, representing Indonesia, underscored Jakarta’s commitment to non-alignment and the pursuit of shared prosperity.
Speaking on behalf of President Prabowo, who was unable to attend due to domestic priorities, Sugiono expressed gratitude to chinese President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government for hosting the summit and extending hospitality to Indonesia as a guest.
“Indonesia accepted the invitation under a full comprehension of the strategic importance of this organization, as well as this summit,” Sugiono stated, drawing parallels between the SCO’s “Shanghai Spirit” – emphasizing trust, equality, mutual benefit, and respect for diversity – and Indonesia’s own historic Bandung Spirit of 1955.
Sugiono highlighted Indonesia’s support for China’s Global Governance Initiative (GGI), noting its alignment with Jakarta’s growth agenda and the nation’s pursuit of prosperity. “The initiative is very instrumental in creating shared prosperity for many countries and peoples,” he affirmed.
The Foreign minister also addressed pressing global challenges, specifically citing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as a stark example of “sovereign equality, respect for international law, and humanity being pushed aside and ignored.” He stressed that effective international cooperation hinges on upholding international law and a stable global order.
Indonesia’s participation in the SCO Plus summit, Sugiono emphasized, demonstrates the country’s commitment to amplifying the voice of the Global South and strengthening a rules-based multilateral system.
“Indonesia’s commitment is to stand as a friend, to act as a partner, and to work with all of you in promoting our shared values and common prosperity,” Sugiono concluded.
The SCO summit brought together leaders and representatives from member states and invited partners to focus on strengthening regional security, economic cooperation, and multilateral governance.
