Instagram Tests Picture-in-Picture for Reels
Instagram is currently testing a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode for Reels on iOS, allowing users to continue watching videos in a floating window while navigating other apps. The test, first reported by TechCrunch, arrives after Instagram head Adam Mosseri indicated the feature was under consideration following user requests for parity with platforms like TikTok and YouTube.
the new functionality is being rolled out via a pop-up prompt encouraging users to “Try picture in picture.” Activating the feature through the prompt directs users to Instagram’s native Share screen where a PiP toggle can be enabled. This growth offers Instagram users increased flexibility and convenience, mirroring a popular feature already available on competing video platforms and addressing long-standing user feedback.
According to the in-app message, enabling PiP allows continued Reel viewing “in a floating window on your device after you’ve left Instagram,” with settings manageable through the “••• menu.” Mosseri previously stated he would “talk to the team and see if we can figure something out” in response to a question about implementing PiP, similar to TikTok and YouTube.
As of September 2, 2025, the test is limited, and Instagram has not announced a timeline for wider release. 9to5Mac will continue to monitor the situation and report on any further developments.
