A suspect has been arrested in the saturday shooting death of Ukrainian politician Andriy Parubiy, Ukraine‘s former secretary of the National Security adn Defence Council, officials confirmed sunday.
The suspect’s identity has not been released. Authorities say the individual is accused of fatally shooting Parubiy in Lviv, a city in northwestern Ukraine. Maksym Kozitskiy, head of the Lviv region’s military management, reported on Telegram that parubiy died at the scene before medical assistance could arrive.
President volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the arrest in a statement,stating,”the necessary investigative actions are ongoing.” He later announced, via another statement, that the suspect had provided “an initial testimony,” as informed by Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko.
the suspect was apprehended in Khmelnytskyi, approximately 150 miles southeast of Lviv.
according to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), the attack was premeditated. The SBU stated the suspect “studied the victim’s schedule of movements, mapped out the route and prepared an escape plan.”
Ukraine’s Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko praised the swift response, saying, “Once again, the police and Security Service of ukraine demonstrated a high level of professionalism. Within 24 hours of the murder, thay were already on the direct trail of the shooter, and within 36 hours, they detained him.” Dozens of officers from the National Police,SBU,and the Office of the Prosecutor General participated in the arrest.
Parubiy, 54, was a current member of Parliament and previously served as Ukraine’s security chief, resigning from that position in August 2014.
