Argentine Captain Steers Humanitarian Flotilla Towards Gaza

An Argentine captain is among those leading a humanitarian flotilla sailing from Barcelona towards Gaza, navigating a journey fraught with risk but fueled by growing international solidarity with Palestine. The captain, a seasoned mariner who goes by González, spoke to Pagina12 about the undertaking, acknowledging the potential for confrontation with Israeli forces while expressing optimism about the shifting global landscape.González is well-aware of the dangers involved, citing past experiences where organizers of similar missions were arrested, deported by Israel, and had their aid confiscated. He specifically referenced the 2010 Free-Gaza Maritime Operation, where activists were killed by the Israeli Navy. However, he believes Israel may adopt a different approach this time, given the increased international attention and the flotilla’s diverse composition.”Maybe make a smarter play than so far made to stop and sink ships and deport people. In addition, now we are many and let’s go from 44 countries. There are twenty-echo peak kids and people of 70 and peak. Imagine getting into an international conflict with people of 44 nationalities,” he explained.

The captain noted a growing wave of support for the Palestinian cause, citing displays of solidarity at events like the Venice Film Festival. “Every day that passes the situation is better for us and worse for them… solidarity exploded with the Palestinian people on all sides,” he stated.

González transitioned to a seafaring life in 2003 after years of political activism on land. He now works as a professional captain, having previously captained a Swiss-flagged sailboat, Passion Flower, used for social work transporting at-risk youth from brazil to Chile. he funds his lifestyle through his work, stating he “does not live in income and I can not navigate happily.”

The flotilla’s precise route, while publicly discussed as originating in Sicily and Greece, is being kept closely guarded, though González suspects Israeli intelligence (Mossad) is already tracking their progress. He acknowledged the operation has both humanitarian and propaganda objectives.

González hinted at possible deviations from the publicly stated route, noting discrepancies in logistical questions regarding fuel requirements. “It gives me the impression that the route will not be exactly the one that is said in public,” he said.Despite the inherent risks, the captain described the experience as “superb,” albeit with a degree of fear. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating, “the opportunity of the expedition also happened in front of my noses. Becuase they won’t leave us.”

Currently sailing through the mediterranean at the time of the interview, González is navigating with a diverse crew, including individuals from 44 countries, ranging in age and sailing experience. He expressed respect for those unfamiliar with seafaring, acknowledging the challenges they face in adapting to life on board, noting it takes several days for most to adjust.
