TOKYO, JAPAN – August 30, 2024, 16:24:04 JST – India and Japan have significantly deepened their strategic partnership following a summit meeting in Tokyo today, unveiling a complete 10-year roadmap for collaboration and a long-term vision document outlining future bilateral relations. The agreements signal a reinforced commitment to cooperation across a wide spectrum of sectors,from economic security and technology to healthcare and people-to-people exchanges.
The strengthened alliance between the two asian powers comes at a pivotal moment, as both nations navigate a complex geopolitical landscape and seek to bolster regional stability. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the summit, characterized the occasion as the beginning of “a new and golden chapter” in the India-Japan special strategic and global partnership. He emphasized that the collaboration will prioritize investment, innovation, economic security, environmental sustainability, technology, health, mobility, and cultural exchange. “We have charted a roadmap for the next decade,” Modi stated, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI).
Modi further underscored the importance of the relationship, noting that India and japan, as asia’s largest democracies and major economies, are crucial in fostering peace and security both regionally and globally. Both countries are also key members of the Quad – a strategic security dialogue also involving the United States and Australia – a grouping increasingly focused on countering regional influence and maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba warmly received Modi, highlighting the deep-rooted historical and cultural connections between the two nations. He recalled the introduction of Buddhism to Japan in the 6th century as a foundational element of their enduring relationship. ”Our relationship dates back to the 6th century,when Buddhism was introduced into Japan. We have a long shared relationship culturally and spiritually; we can influence each other,” Ishiba said.
