New Delhi: India has temporarily suspended postal services to the United States, effective immediately, in response to recently imposed tariffs on Indian goods. The decision impacts the dispatch of all articles intended for delivery within the US.
The Department of Posts announced the suspension, citing difficulties in ensuring timely and reliable delivery given the current trade environment. The move follows President Donald trumps imposition of a 50% tariff on a range of Indian goods.
Further exacerbating the situation, the US has also levied an additional 25% penalty on Indian entities purchasing Russian oil. This dual-pronged tariff structure prompted the Indian government’s response.
The Department of Posts stated it is “closely monitoring the evolving situation in coordination with all stakeholders, and every effort is being made to normalise services at the earliest possible chance.”
Customers who have already booked articles that cannot be dispatched to the USA due to these circumstances may seek a refund of postage,” the release said.
The suspension of postal services comes against the backdrop of escalating trade tensions between India and the US. The tariffs represent a significant escalation in a long-running dispute over trade imbalances and economic policies.
India has strongly criticized the US decision, labeling it as “unfair, unjustified and unreasonable” and asserting it will “take all actions” necessary to protect national interests.
