A recent Reddit post ignited a debate about navigating sensitive conversations surrounding mental health and marital disagreements. A 37-year-old man turned to the “Am I the Asshole” subreddit seeking validation after his wife questioned his supportive response to a friend opening up about seeking therapy.
A Friend’s Courageous Step
The poster explained that he and his friend, whom he’s known since childhood, reconnected four years ago despite living in diffrent countries. He noted a shift in his friend’s openness, notably regarding mental wellbeing. “Mental health was not really somthing we thought of much when growing up,” he wrote. “In the past 10 years or so though, I’ve been very vocal about getting help, and talking about mental health.”
Recently, his friend confided that he was struggling and wanted to find a therapist. Though, the friend revealed his wife was unsupportive, dismissing the need for professional help with outdated notions of “toughing it out.” The poster responded with empathy, telling his friend, “That’s unfortunate to hear, and not very supportive.”
Wife’s Disapproval Sparks Conflict
Upon sharing the conversation with his wife, the poster was met with criticism. She argued he was to quick to judge his friend’s wife without knowing her outlook and deemed his comment “rude.” This disagreement prompted the poster to ask Reddit: “AITA?”

Reddit Weighs In
The overwhelming response on Reddit sided with the poster. Many users criticized the wife’s reaction, arguing that dismissing someone’s need for mental health support is harmful. One commenter stated, “His wife is wrong,” while another added, “Actually, both wives are wrong.” Several users pointed out the importance of validating a friend’s feelings and seeking help when needed.
