Weert man Cycles to Italy to Break Addiction Stigma

WEERT, NETHERLANDS – November 16, 2023 – Herold, a resident of Weert, Netherlands, embarked on a 22-day bicycle journey on November 1st, 2023, from Weert to Alberobello, Italy, with the goal of raising awareness and dismantling the stigma surrounding addiction. He is accompanied in spirit and support by his partner, Jolanda.
A Journey of recovery and Awareness
Herold and jolanda are undertaking this initiative to create a safe space for individuals in recovery.Jolanda will share insights into the experiences of partners supporting loved ones through addiction recovery, while Herold will focus on addressing the internal struggles faced by those battling addiction – including guilt, shame, disbelief, and self-pity – which he identifies as key stigmas to overcome. Their motto for the trip is “Kick the stigma breaks.”
Alberobello: A Haven for healing
The couple plans to establish a Bed & Breakfast and consciousness center in Alberobello, a town in the Puglia region of Italy renowned for its unique trulli – conventional Apulian dry stone huts with conical roofs. they aim to purchase a trullo to serve as the center’s base. The B&B will operate for six months annually, while the remaining five months will be dedicated to providing support and recovery tools for fellow sufferers of addiction.They intend to reserve the month of December for personal rest and relaxation, embracing the italian concept of dolce far niente (sweet doing nothing).
Documenting the Journey with SBS
Herold and jolanda have arranged for the SBS (dutch public broadcasting) program “The Helm is” to document their experiences in Italy. A camera crew and director will live with them for six months,recording their lives as they establish the B&B and consciousness center. The program aims to provide an intimate look at their journey and the challenges and triumphs of building a new life focused on recovery and support.
