Indonesia’s Maritime Importance: A Growing Market
Indonesia, an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, possesses the world’s second-longest coastline, measuring approximately 54,716 kilometers (33,999 miles). This extensive coastline and strategic location along major shipping routes make Indonesia a critical maritime nation. The country’s shipbuilding industry has experienced notable growth in recent years, driven by both domestic demand and increasing exports. According to data from the Indonesian Ministry of Industry, the shipbuilding sector contributed $3.5 billion to the Indonesian economy in 2024.
Batam Island, located just south of Singapore, is a key industrial hub and free trade zone. It is indeed home to numerous shipyards, including those specializing in the repair and maintenance of large vessels. Jakarta, as the nation’s capital and largest city, serves as the administrative and commercial center for the maritime industry.
Kongsberg Maritime’s expansion reflects a broader trend of international companies investing in Indonesia’s maritime sector. The Norwegian company’s commitment to providing localized support will likely enhance its competitiveness and strengthen its relationships with Indonesian customers.
