Boulder, colorado – August 7, 2025 – The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) has issued a geomagnetic storm watch for August 7th and 8th, 2025, forecasting increased auroral activity potentially visible across a broader swath of the United States than usual. This heightened activity is linked to a coronal mass ejection (CME) that departed the Sun on August 3rd, 2025, traveling at approximately 800 kilometers per second.

Understanding the Aurora Borealis

The aurora borealis, commonly known as the Northern Lights, is a natural light display in the sky, predominantly seen in the high-latitude regions (around the Arctic and antarctic). These mesmerizing displays are caused by collisions between electrically charged particles released from the sun that enter the Earth’s atmosphere and collide with gases such as oxygen and nitrogen. The colors of the aurora depend on which gas is being excited and at what altitude. Green is the most common color, produced by oxygen at lower altitudes, while red is produced by oxygen at higher altitudes. Nitrogen produces blue and purple hues.

The SWPC utilizes data from satellites like the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) and ground-based observatories to monitor space weather and provide these predictions. The Kp-index, a global geomagnetic disturbance index, is predicted to reach 5, indicating a moderate geomagnetic storm.
