Rocky Horror Picture Show Turns 50: Restoration, Events & More

LOS ANGELES, CA – September 19, 2023 – Celebrations are underway for the 50th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the cult classic known for its audience participation, flamboyant costumes, and enduring appeal. A series of events kicking off this week will commemorate the film’s half-century milestone, including a nationwide tour, screenings of a newly restored version, and special releases of the soundtrack and film on home video.

Released in 1973, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, directed by Jim Sharman and starring tim Curry, Susan Sarandon, and Barry Bostwick, initially received mixed reviews. However, it quickly gained a devoted following through midnight screenings where audiences actively engaged with the film, dressing up as characters, shouting lines, and performing choreographed dances. It is recognized by Guinness World Records as the longest-running theatrical release, continuously playing in cinemas since its debut.

“When The Rocky Horror Picture Show was first released, no one thought it would be around very long let alone 50 years,” saeid producer Lou Adler in a statement. “What began as a small, rebellious project has become a global celebration of individuality, community, and creative freedom. This anniversary is a tribute to the fans who kept it alive and kicking all thes years.”

Here’s a breakdown of the 50th-anniversary events:

Sept. 23 – Nov. 3: The Rocky Horror Picture Show Spectacular Tour, presented by Scott Stander Productions, will bring cast members Barry Bostwick (Brad Majors), Patricia Quinn (Magenta), and Nell Campbell (Columbia) to 55 cities across the U.S. and Canada for appearances and meet-and-greets. Sept. 26: The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles will host a screening of a newly restored 4K version of the film in the David Geffen Theater, followed by a Q&A session with talent involved in the production. The event begins at 7:30 PM PST.

Sept. 27: An official Rocky Horror fan convention will take over The Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood, California. The convention will feature panel discussions, book signings, appearances by artists, and other fan-focused activities.

October: Newly restored 4K versions of The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be screened in movie theaters nationwide throughout the month. Moviegoers are encouraged to check local listings for showtimes and locations.

Oct. 4: Cinespia will present an outdoor screening of the film at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles.The event will include an interactive shadow cast performance, DJ sets, a Time Warp dance party, giveaways, a themed photo booth, and special guests. Doors open at 6:00 PM PST.

Oct. 7: A limited-edition collectible SteelBook 4K Blu-ray of The Rocky Horror Picture Show will be released, featuring Dolby Vision and Atmos audio. A digital version will also be available on platforms including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home.

Oct. 10: A 50th-anniversary deluxe edition of the original movie soundtrack will be reissued on 180g red-in-gold vinyl, housed in a heavyweight gold-foil jacket. The release will also include a newly designed inner sleeve featuring previously unpublished photos and excerpts from producer richard Hartley’s production diary.

Oct. 15: The Grammy Museum in Los Angeles will host a screening of the film followed by a panel discussion focused on its iconic soundtrack. Fat Mike (of NOFX and the band’s cover of “Sweet Transvestite” fame) is confirmed as a panelist, with additional participants to be announced.
