Former German World Cup Winner Frank Mill Dies at 67
Düsseldorf, Germany – Former German international footballer Frank Mill has died at the age of 67 following a heart attack. Mill was reportedly resuscitated by emergency medical personnel before passing away. The news was confirmed in a statement released by Fortuna Düsseldorf on Tuesday, February 20, 2024.
“We are with Frank’s family and all those close to him in these difficult hours,” the Düsseldorf statement read.
A Key Figure in German football
Mill was a member of the West Germany squad that won the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy.He is the second member of that victorious team to pass away in recent months,following the death of Andreas Brehme in February 2024. Mill earned 17 caps for his country, though he did not feature in any matches during the 1990 World Cup tournament itself.
Throughout his club career, Mill played for several prominent German teams, including Fortuna Düsseldorf (from 1979-1987, making 258 appearances and scoring 48 goals), Rot-Weiß Essen, Borussia Dortmund (where he played 66 matches and scored 11 goals between 1987-1989), and Borussia Mönchengladbach (1989-1991).He also briefly served as a manager for Fortuna Düsseldorf in 1999.
After retiring as a player, Mill founded a football school dedicated to youth development and remained involved in the sport as a member of the Borussia Dortmund “Old Boys” team. He was born on July 16,1957,in Cologne,West Germany.
