Minor Tremors Felt Across New York City Following east coast Quake
New York, NY – Residents of New York City experienced minor tremors on Saturday, June 8, 2024, as an earthquake registered on the East Coast. The New York City Emergency Management department confirmed that while tremors may have been felt in various parts of the city, there have been no reports of injuries or structural damage.
Context: East Coast Seismicity
Earthquakes on the U.S. East Coast are a relatively infrequent occurrence.According to Xan Davidson, a USGS analyst, the magnitude of Saturday’s event was not considered significant enough to cause widespread damage, with the primary effect being noticeable shaking.
This event follows a more substantial seismic activity in April 2024, when a 4.8 magnitude earthquake, centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, impacted a broad region. That quake, one of the largest recorded on the East Coast in the past century, was felt from Philadelphia to Connecticut and across New York, including Westchester.
Davidson noted that the extensive reach of Saturday’s tremors, extending as far as Connecticut, is not unusual for East Coast seismic events and should not be a cause for significant concern.
