Wirtz Takes Liverpool’s Iconic No.7 Shirt After Diaz Move
Colombian’s Bayern Transfer Paves Way for New Anfield Star
Florian Wirtz has officially claimed Liverpool’s coveted No.7 jersey, a number recently vacated by Luis Diaz following his significant transfer to Bayern Munich. The German international’s arrival marks a new era for the iconic kit.
Diaz Secures Bundesliga Switch
Colombian forward Luis Diaz completed his £65.5 million transfer from Anfield to the German giants earlier this week. Diaz’s departure ends a three-and-a-half-year spell with the Merseyside club, where he was a key player, notably in their Premier League title charge last season.
Despite initial reluctance from Liverpool to part with the 28-year-old, unsuccessful contract negotiations led to the acceptance of a second offer from Bayern Munich.
Wirtz Embraces Liverpool Legacy
Just days after Diaz‘s exit, Florian Wirtz, acquired from Bayer Leverkusen for a potential £116 million, was unveiled in the new No.7 shirt. This occurred concurrently with the launch of the 2025/26 season kits.
Following the announcement, Wirtz shared images on Instagram wearing the new home and away kits, captioning them, “When dreams become reality. Come on Liverpool x adidasfootball!” Several of his new teammates, including Ibrahima Konate and Alexis Mac Allister, showed their support by liking the post.
Notably, Diaz himself also ‘liked’ Wirtz‘s celebratory post, indicating no ill feelings towards his successor.
Cross-League Respect
The former Liverpool player had previously revealed he sought advice from the German international prior to his move to Bayern.
“I know what kind of football is played here. Florian told me that the Bundesliga has a high-intensity, comparable to the Premier League. The stadiums are always full. Florian wished me a lot of luck.”

Wirtz‘s transfer continues a trend of significant investment in attacking talent by Premier League clubs; for instance, Manchester City invested approximately £51 million in acquiring Jérémy Doku in 2023 (BBC Sport, 2023).
