Google Rolls Out AI-Powered Search Mode in the UK, Microsoft Launches Copilot Search for Organizations

Google has introduced a new AI-driven search experience in the UK, utilizing its Gemini large language model (LLM) to generate responses instead of the conventional list of links. This “AI Mode” allows for more natural, conversational search queries, moving beyond keyword-based searches. the feature, which has already been available in India and the US, can be accessed via a dedicated tab on the search results page and through mobile apps for Android and iOS. Users can initiate searches using text, voice, or even photos captured with their phone cameras.

While announced on July 28th, initial attempts by Computing to test the feature in the UK were met with a message indicating it was not yet available on the device or account. This development comes as LLM-powered search gains traction, with dedicated platforms like Perplexity, which cite their sources, and chatbots becoming increasingly popular methods for information retrieval. Google’s AI Mode is not intended to replace its conventional search engine, but it reflects a clear awareness of this evolving search landscape.

However, the shift towards AI-generated search results and summaries is already impacting website traffic. Research from the Pew Research Center indicates that users are half as likely to click on a link when presented with an AI-generated overview. Furthermore, 26% of pages featuring a summary were closed immediately, compared to 16% of pages without a summary. In parallel,Microsoft has launched Microsoft 365 Copilot Search,a feature designed for organizational use. integrated into the Copilot app, this tool aims to help users discover information embedded within enterprise applications through a conversational interface. Microsoft states that the integration with Microsoft 365 Copilot enables users to find results and then seamlessly engage in chat for further exploration or task completion. Copilot Search operates across Microsoft’s applications and can also connect with third-party solutions via available connectors, with hundreds reportedly already in place. microsoft 365 Copilot Search is available at no extra cost to users with an eligible Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
