gaza Aid Efforts Hampered by Israeli Military Actions,UN Reports Over 1,000 deaths Near aid Sites since May
Teh delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza continues to face important challenges, with the Israeli military reportedly killing over 1,000 individuals attempting to access food since may, primarily in the vicinity of aid distribution points, according to United Nations data. Joseph Belliveau, executive director of MedGlobal, described the situation as a “deliberate and human-made disaster,” highlighting the critical shortage of food and essential medical supplies, including IV fluids and therapeutic formula, which are vital for treating malnourished children.
In a separate incident in June, the Israeli military intercepted a humanitarian aid vessel belonging to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. Among those detained were prominent climate activist Greta Thunberg and European Parliament member Rima Hassan. Thunberg was subsequently deported, while Hassan was held in Israeli custody for three days, including a period in solitary confinement.
Human rights attorney Arraf, who has participated in previous flotilla missions, stated that Israel has historically employed various tactics to impede aid efforts, including violent actions such as attacks, beatings, abductions, arrests, imprisonment, and fatalities among volunteers.Arraf recalled a 2010 incident where 10 volunteers were killed during a flotilla mission, emphasizing that such actions have not deterred their commitment to delivering aid.
