Shohei Otani Rivalry Intensifies: Suarez Trade Rumors & MLB Shakeup

Suarez on the Move? Multiple MLB Teams Express Interest in Diamondbacks Slugger

As the MLB trade deadline approaches, several American League clubs are reportedly showing notable interest in acquiring Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez. The Mariners, Yankees, and Astros have all been mentioned as potential suitors, with the Mariners reportedly prioritizing Suárez even after a recent trade.

Suárez, currently in the second year of a seven-year, $66 million contract, has been a key offensive contributor for the Diamondbacks this season. In 101 games, he has posted a .252 batting average, 36 home runs, 86 RBIs, and an OPS of .918. Notably, Suárez has hit two home runs in consecutive games, bringing him within one homer of Shohei Ohtani’s league-leading 37. His 86 RBIs also place him second in the National League, just ahead of Seiya Suzuki of the Cubs.

The Diamondbacks, currently fourth in the NL West with a 50-53 record and 10 games behind the division-leading Dodgers, appear to be shifting their focus towards the future. With the July 31st trade deadline looming, the team is expected to be active sellers. Earlier in the week, the Diamondbacks traded first baseman Josh Naylor to the Mariners for pitchers Brandin Garcia and Ashton Iji.

Reports from MLB insiders indicate a competitive market for Suárez. John Heyman of the New York Post tweeted on July 21st that the Yankees, Mariners, and Cubs where all interested.Daniel Kramer, reporting for MLB.com, stated on July 24th that the Mariners’ pursuit of Suárez remained a top priority. Additionally, Francis Romero of the National Press Association reported on the same day that the Astros were showing interest, with their farm system potentially capable of facilitating a deal. MLB Network also suggested a potential trade between the Reds and Diamondbacks involving Suárez.

If Suárez is traded to an American League team, it could considerably impact the home run and RBI races, potentially removing a key competitor for Ohtani and Suzuki.
