Metal Price Fluctuations: Cobalt, Lithium, and Rare Earths in 2025

Global demand for manganese, a key component in steel production and increasingly in batteries, is experiencing a meaningful upswing. The International Aluminium Institute (IAI) highlights the growing use of manganese in battery chemistries, moving from lithium-cobalt oxide to lithium-ferro-manganese phosphate.

Prices for manganese ore saw a significant increase in the latter half of 2024. This surge is attributed to supply disruptions affecting Australia and Gabon, coupled with escalating demand.French company Eramet,a leading global manganese producer, reported a 13% rise in the price index for 44% manganese ore during the first quarter of 2025,with negotiations settling at $4.6 per tonne (DMTU).

Looking ahead, the outlook for the remainder of 2025 and into 2026 presents a mixed picture. Global steel production is anticipated to remain stable in 2025, which is expected to provide moderate support for manganese demand. However, analysts note that investments in battery production are not keeping pace with the sector’s growth. according to Chemalyst, the manganese market is projected to maintain a balance or even experience a slight surplus until 2026.Beyond this period, a significant deficit is anticipated towards the end of the decade, which could lead to further price increases.
