Poland’s Massive Oil Discovery: Reserves Exceed 33 Million Tons

Poland has announced a significant oil and gas discovery, possibly the largest ever on its territory, according too Central European Petroleum and TVP World.

The newly identified field, located at the Wolin East 1 well, is estimated to hold approximately 22 million tons of oil and 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas. Preliminary assessments by polands Ministry of Climate and the Environment suggest total reserves could reach 33 million tons of oil and condensate, along with 27 billion cubic meters of gas.

“If this discovery is finally confirmed, the Wolin-East deposit can be the largest oil field and the accompanying natural gas that has ever been discovered in Poland,” stated Galos.

This development comes as the european Union seeks to bolster its energy independence and reduce reliance on imports. The EU has been actively diversifying its energy sources and aims to phase out Russian oil and gas by 2027. Despite efforts to reduce dependency, the EU spent more on Russian oil and gas in 2024 than on aid to Ukraine, according to The Guardian.

The EU’s domestic production, particularly from the North Sea, is facing depletion, making discoveries like the one in Poland crucial for the bloc’s energy security strategy.
