Ari Aster’s Next Project: Horror, Sci-Fi & “Eddington 2”?

Ari Aster, known for his critically acclaimed and commercially triumphant films like “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” is facing a different reception with his latest work. While his earlier films resonated strongly with both audiences and critics, “Beau is Afraid” garnered a more mixed response and proved too be an economic disappointment.

His most recent film, “Eddington,” a unique take on the “covid western” genre, has premiered in the United States. Like “Beau is Afraid,” “Eddington” has also received mixed reviews and is reportedly an economic disappointment. The impact of these recent performances on Aster’s future career remains to be seen.

Despite the commercial challenges, Aster appears to have a wealth of creative ideas. During a recent appearance on The Big Picture podcast, he discussed potential future projects. “I’ve worked on a sequel to ‘Eddington’,” Aster revealed. He also expressed interest in directing a horror film and is contemplating a science fiction adaptation, stating, “I try to figure out what is the right thing to do next.”

The question remains whether Aster will be granted the creative freedom to pursue his most passionate projects. If “Eddington” marks his second consecutive box office flop, the willingness of financiers to support his vision might potentially be tested. Some speculate that a return to the horror genre, which launched his career, might be a strategic move.

“Eddington” is scheduled for release in Sweden on August 8.
