Arsenal Secures Canada Star Olivia Smith
Young Forward Arrives on Long-Term Deal
Arsenal has officially announced the capture of Canadian international Olivia Smith, securing the promising forward on a long-term contract. The 20-year-old joins the North London club from Liverpool for an undisclosed sum.
A Rapid Ascent in European Football
Smith’s journey in professional football has been remarkably swift. After developing in her native Canada and the US college system, she inked her first professional contract with Sporting Clube in Portugal in July 2023. Her impact was immediate, registering a goal and an assist on her debut. She went on to net 16 goals in 28 appearances for Sporting during the 2023/24 season, culminating in her being crowned Liga BPI Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season.
Her impressive performances earned her a move to the Women’s Super League with Liverpool in July 2024. Last season, she contributed nine goals in 25 matches across all competitions for the Merseyside team. This stellar form also saw her voted Liverpool’s Player of the Season and earn a nomination for the WSL Rising Star award.
International Acclaim and Ambition
On the international stage, Olivia Smith made history by becoming Canada’s youngest-ever player at just 15 years old in 2019. She has since earned 18 caps and scored four goals for her country, featuring in the 2023 FIFA World Cup and the 2024 CONCACAF W Gold Cup, where she was recognized as the Best Young Player. Her exceptional talent was further acknowledged when she received Canada’s Young Player of the Year award in 2024.
