A groundbreaking advancement in optical fiber technology has shattered previous speed records, enabling data transmission over an impressive 1,800 kilometers. This distance is equivalent to the span between New York and Florida. The significant research findings were unveiled at the 48th Optical Fiber Communication Conference, held on April 3 in San Francisco.
19 Fibers in a Single Cable
The pivotal element behind this remarkable achievement is a novel optical fiber technology that ingeniously integrates 19 distinct fibers within a single cable. This cable, measuring a mere 0.127 millimeters in diameter, possesses the same thickness as standard cables currently in use. However, these new fibers exhibit enhanced compatibility with light, resulting in reduced data loss and the capacity for transmission over greater distances.
This innovative fiber structure represents a significant leap forward, traversing approximately three times the distance of a previous study conducted in 2023 that achieved similar speeds. Researchers successfully navigated technical hurdles, including minimizing data loss and amplifying signal power, to realize this success.
After data traversed the fiber 21 times in total, it successfully completed its 1,800-kilometer journey to its destination.
‘It is Possible to Download the Entire Internet in 4 Minutes’
With the implementation of this new speed, the theoretical capability to download all Internet archive data in a mere few minutes is now within reach. the previous record stood at 50,250 gigabytes per second. This
