Gymnast Jonas Rushworth Leaps to European Championship Gold While Deepening Faith

British athlete attributes success to Christ and family support

At just 19 years old, British gymnast Jonas Rushworth has clinched a European Championship gold medal, marking a significant milestone in his athletic career. This achievement comes as Rushworth increasingly focuses on his spiritual journey, finding strength and guidance through his faith in Christ.

From Childhood Whimsy to Championship Podium

Rushworth’s path to elite gymnastics began unconventionally. Described as a hyperactive and remarkably flexible child, his parents enrolled him in gymnastics classes, a decision that would shape his next 16 years of rigorous training for the Great Britain team. His dedication culminated in a gold medal win at his first senior competition, the European Championships, on May 31.

Reflecting on his success, Rushworth shared,

“Actively trying to find a relationship with Christ while working hard at a goal that I can only achieve with Him is how I know I’ve been blessed with this talent and ability from my Heavenly Father.”

A Foundation of Faith

Jonas Rushworth’s spiritual upbringing played a crucial role in his life. His father, Daniel Rushworth, was raised in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, while his mother, Venessa Rushworth, joined the Church as a young adult. The couple met while serving missions for the Church in England.

“Something that stood out is the priesthood in my life,” Jonas Rushworth explained. “Having priesthood blessings answered and having a strong priesthood holder in the house has been a big part.” He also emphasized how witnessing answered family prayers strengthened his faith, stating, “I’ve definitely learned to have trust and faith in Christ and His plan for me. And my parents have helped with that.”

Balancing Athletics and Spirituality

As Rushworth transitioned to a professional gymnastics career, his family offered unwavering support, making personal sacrifices. Simultaneously, he committed to deepening his understanding of Christ and the teachings of the Church. He focused on maximizing his time in Church meetings, praying daily, attending institute classes, and studying scriptures.

This commitment did not go unnoticed by his peers and coaches. Some inquired about his church experiences, prompting Rushworth to seek deeper understanding.

“I didn’t have the answers straight away, and that bothered me. It pushed me to grow a testimony.”

His diligent study proved rewarding. A fellow gymnast once shared Philippians 4:13, to which Rushworth responded by quoting Ether 12:27 from the Book of Mormon: “‘I have this similar scripture here from the Book of Mormon that I love,’ and he said: ‘Yeah, how sick is that? Weak things will become strong.’” This shared experience highlights how Rushworth integrates his faith into his athletic pursuits, engaging in conversations about his beliefs and sharing scriptures with teammates during his travels.

Future Goals and Gospel Outreach

Rushworth emphasizes the importance of setting Christ-centered goals in all aspects of life. Following a goal to learn about joy through daily repentance, his current focus is on temple worship and the potential for serving a full-time mission.

He aspires to spread the gospel through his gymnastics career.

“You never know. I could be on the Olympic stage with a Book of Mormon in my hand.”

Gymnastics is a sport that demands incredible physical and mental discipline. For instance, elite gymnasts can perform over 50 different skills on the six apparatuses, requiring thousands of hours of training annually (USA Gymnastics). Rushworth’s ability to balance this demanding schedule with a commitment to his faith exemplifies a profound dedication.
