Trump threatens Brazil with 50% tariff over Bolsonaro trial

Trump Threatens Brazil With 50% Tariff Amidst Rising Tensions

Trade War Looms as US President Accuses Brazil of Anti-US Bias

Escalating tensions between the United States and Brazil, former US President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 50% tax on Brazilian goods, citing grievances over trade and political issues. The move has triggered strong reactions from Brazil, raising concerns about a potential trade war.

Accusations and Justifications

In a tariff letter shared on social media, Trump accused Brazil of “attacks” on US tech companies and a “witch hunt” against former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, who faces prosecution for his alleged role in attempting to overturn the 2022 election. He also criticized rulings suspending social media accounts.

The letter further stated that a 50% tariff was necessary… to rectify the grave injustices of the current regime. Additionally, Trump directed the US Trade Representative to initiate a 301 investigation into Brazil’s digital trade practices, signaling a more formal approach to imposing tariffs.

Brazil’s Response

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva responded to Trump’s threats, warning against any interference in Brazil’s judicial system and stating that increased tariffs would be reciprocated. The exchange highlights the deteriorating relationship between the two nations under Trump’s renewed focus on trade.

During the week, Lula asserted that Brazil would not accept “interference” from anyone, stating: “No one is above the law.”

Broader Trade Actions

These actions follow a pattern of aggressive trade tactics by Trump. This week, he posted 22 letters outlining new tariffs on goods from various countries, including Japan, South Korea, and Sri Lanka, set to take effect on August 1st. Data from the World Trade Organization shows that trade restrictive measures have been steadily increasing, impacting global commerce (WTO, March 2024).

Bolsonaro’s Trial and US Tech Companies

Trump has voiced support for Bolsonaro, calling the trial against him “an international disgrace.” He added that he “respected him greatly.” The two leaders maintained a close relationship during their presidencies, with Bolsonaro often referred to as the “Trump of the Tropics.”

Trump’s social media company, Trump Media, is among the US tech companies challenging Brazilian court rulings that have suspended social media accounts. Brazil had also temporarily banned Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) after the platform declined to ban accounts deemed to be spreading misinformation about the 2022 Brazilian presidential election.

Last month, Brazil’s Supreme Court ruled that social media companies can be held responsible for content posted on their platforms, reflecting a broader global debate on social media regulation. This action is part of a broader action against what they termed insidious attacks on Free Elections, and the fundamental Free Speech Rights of Americans”.

BRICS Summit

Trump also criticized the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, labeling the group, which includes Brazil, as “anti-American” and threatening an additional 10% tariff on those countries. President Lula responded sharply, stating, “He needs to know that the world has changed. We don’t want an emperor.”

Earlier this week, Trump compared Bolsonaro’s prosecution to his own legal challenges, stating: “This is nothing more, or less, than an attack on a Political Opponent – Something I know much about!” Bolsonaro thanked Trump for his support.

Looking Ahead

The proposed tariffs and escalating rhetoric signal a potential shift in US-Brazil relations, with significant implications for trade and political alliances. The situation remains fluid, but the potential for a trade war looms large as both nations brace for the next move.
