Expert analyses tsunami risk after over 15 earthquakes in the Andaman Sea

Thailand Coast Braces for Potential Tsunami Threat

Evacuation Drills Planned Amid Earthquake Concerns

Thailand’s Andaman coast residents are advised to be vigilant due to potential seismic activity. Authorities are preparing for the possibility of a tsunami, emphasizing the need for preparedness and swift action in case of a real emergency.

Anticipated Scenarios

According to historical data, Santi is advising the public to stay informed about the situation. Several outcomes remain possible: a series of minor quakes, an underwater volcanic eruption possibly triggering tsunami waves, or a major earthquake. However, a large earthquake is less likely to create a tsunami due to the fault’s movement.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation will conduct a tsunami evacuation drill in six Andaman Sea coastal provinces. The drill is scheduled for Friday, June 27, 2025, at 2:30 PM. Officials hope this exercise will improve disaster readiness.

Drill Alerts and Locations

During the drill, alerts will be sent through local alarm towers. The warnings will include:

M2 (Earthquake in the Sea Warning)

“Attention, attention, an earthquake has occurred in the sea. A tsunami may follow. Please evacuate the beach area and move to higher ground immediately.”

M3 (Tsunami Warning)

“Attention, attention, a tsunami is now occurring. Please evacuate the beach area and move to higher ground immediately.”

The drill locations across the six provinces include: Phang Nga: Ban Nam Khem, Ban Bang Sak Nuea, and Ban Bang Sak Tai, Bang Muang Subdistrict, Takua Pa District.

Official Instructions

Residents in the affected areas are asked to remain calm. Authorities encourage participation in the scheduled drill. These drills help ensure disaster responses are effective. In 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami killed an estimated 230,000 people (National Geographic 2024).

Moving Forward

Coastal residents should take note of the drill instructions. Active participation in the drill is critical. Effective disaster response hinges on preparedness.
