Ecuador’s most wanted drug lord ‘Fito’ captured in ‘underground bunker’

Ecuadorian Drug Lord Fito Recaptured After Daring Escape

Underground Hideout Uncovered in Manta, Signaling a Win for President Noboa

The most wanted man in Ecuador, drug kingpin Adolfo Macías Villamar, known as “Fito,” is back in custody. His capture represents a major victory for the authorities, following his dramatic escape from prison earlier this year. His capture shows that his methods are working.

The Recapture Operation

Authorities tracked Macías to a concealed bunker below a luxurious Manta residence. A joint police and military operation, which spanned ten hours, culminated in the apprehension. The bunker was fully equipped, featuring air conditioning, a bed, and a refrigerator.

Upon entering the three-story dwelling, officers discovered a hidden trap door concealed within the stone flooring. This led to metal stairs accessing Fito‘s underground hideaway. He surrendered without any resistance.

“More [drug lords] will fall, we will regain [control of] the country,”

Daniel Noboa, President of Ecuador

Ecuador has seen a sharp increase in violence. The country’s homicide rate has skyrocketed to 40 per 100,000 people, according to recent data. This represents a substantial increase from previous years, demonstrating the scale of the crisis (Statista, 2024).

A Notorious Figure

Macías, the leader of the Los Choneros gang, had previously been serving a 34-year sentence. He is believed to be responsible for transforming Ecuador into a nation grappling with a high murder rate. He is also linked to the murder of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio.

From behind bars, Fito coordinated the criminal activities of the gang. These activities include drug trafficking and extortion. He cultivated ties with Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, which led to the spread of violent tactics.

Fito has escaped from prison twice before so security was high

The recapture of Fito marks a significant development in the ongoing battle against organized crime in Ecuador. The president has stated that he will be extradited to the United States, where he faces cocaine smuggling charges. This action will likely send a message that the government is serious about its commitment.
