Major Shakeup Announced

World Netball (WN) has unveiled a significant overhaul of its global events strategy, with the Netball World Cup (NWC) set to occur every two years. This plan also includes the introduction of a men’s NWC, signifying a major expansion of the sport.

These changes follow WN’s earlier announcement regarding the NWC format and schedule from 2027. This encompasses the introduction of Cup and Plate competitions, adding a new dimension to the tournament.

The aim of these developments is to spotlight the best netball talent globally, boosting the sport’s visibility. This strategy intends to usher netball into an exciting new era.

Future Schedule and New Events

Following the 2027 NWC in Sydney, future NWCs will take place in November. The biennial cycle will put the next NWC in November 2029.

This revamped event window offers clarity for stakeholders, including athletes, fans, partners, and members. Moreover, this arrangement won’t clash with professional leagues in key markets.

From November 2028, WN intends to launch a new biennial event in non-NWC years. Hosting this event will be a key factor in future NWC hosting agreements. This structure ensures yearly world-class international netball competitions.

International netball has never been more competitive, but the landscape is becoming increasingly complex to navigate.”

Fiona Harold, WN CEO

Harold added that the decisions enable WN to control its path. WN aims to nurture the game for the long term, and a men’s NWC will further the sport’s growth. In 2023, 20 million people watched netball globally, showing the growing popularity of the sport (Sport’s Growth Report).

Men’s Netball and Future Plans

Harold expressed that while netball respects tradition, it will not be held back. The sport is open to everyone and adding the men’s game seems timely due to its rapid growth. Many stakeholders support this, especially to improve the chances of Olympic inclusion.

Harold also noted that initial discussions are ongoing with members regarding hosting rights for 2028–2035, with an official process starting soon.

Furthermore, WN has decided to temporarily pause the FAST5 Netball World Series. Multi-sport games remain a core part of WN’s strategy, with potential international club competitions.
