Ringo Starr‘s All starr Band Rocks Radio City music Hall

Former Beatle Ringo Starr, just shy of his 85th birthday, proved he’s still got it as he and his All Starr Band captivated a sold-out crowd at New York’s Radio City Music Hall on Friday night. The concert was especially meaningful,following Starr’s need to cancel tour dates last year due to illness, including a scheduled appearance in the Big Apple.

A Night of Beatles and Solo Hits

The Radio City performance more than compensated for the previous cancellation.Starr, backed by his All Starr Band-featuring guitarist/singer Steve Lukather (Toto), bassist/singer Hamish Stuart (Average White Band), guitarist/singer colin Hay (Men at Work), woodwinds player/multi-instrumentalist Warren Ham, drummer gregg Bissonette, and keyboardist Buck Johnson-delivered a setlist packed with both his solo material and beloved Beatles tracks, all with starr on lead vocals.

The show commenced with an energetic rendition of Carl Perkins’ rockabilly classic “Honey Don’t,” a song the Beatles themselves covered on their 1964 album,*Beatles for Sale*. From there, Starr alternated between singing centre stage and drumming, leading the band through Beatles staples such as “Yellow Submarine,” “Boys,” “octopus’s Garden,” “I Wanna Be Your Man,” and Buck Owens’ “Act Naturally.”

Beyond the Beatles and Ringo Starr solo hits, the other members of the all Starr Band had their moments to shine.Steve Lukather delivered Toto’s chart-toppers “Rosanna,” “Africa,” and “Hold the line.” Colin Hay performed Men at Work’s iconic songs, including “Who Can It Be Now,” “Down Under,” and “Overkill.” Hamish Stuart showcased the Average White Band’s funky sound with “pick up the Pieces” and “Cut the Cake.” The Average White Band’s influence on funk music remains significant.
