Houston’s Moa Svedenskiold Competes at NCAA Championships

CARLSBAD, Calif. – University of Houston Women’s Golf junior Moa Svedenskiold completed the Second Round of the NCAA Championships at omni La Costa Resort and Spa on Saturday, facing a challenging course and a field of top competitors.

Round Two Performance

Svedenskiold, a Halmstad, Sweden, native, followed an opening-round 74 with a 78 in the second round. This placed her tied for 103rd with a total score of 152.

Starting on the 10th hole, Svedenskiold was +5 through her first 12 holes. She recovered with two birdies in a three-hole stretch at Nos. 4 and 6.

Individual and Team leaders

Mississippi State’s Avery Weed took the individual lead after posting a 68 on Saturday, putting her at 7-under 137. south Carolina’s Eila Galitsky was in second place at 139. Elsa Svensson (LSU), Catherine park (USC), and Grace Kilcrease (Oklahoma State) were tied for third at 140.

In the team competition, no. 1 Stanford moved into the lead with a score of 571 after finishing 10-under on Saturday. No. 11 Northwestern was in second at 576, while No. 5 Oregon was in third at 577. No.9 USC and No. 4 florida State were tied for fourth at 579.

Svedenskiold’s Path to the Championships

Svedenskiold, whose name is pronounced Mo-Uh Suh-Vee-Den-Kee-Old, secured her spot at the NCAA championships after finishing fifth with a score of 2-under 214 at the NCAA Columbus Regional on the Scarlet Course at ohio State Golf Club from May 5-7.She achieved this by firing three straight rounds of par or lower.

The regional performance was highlighted by a clutch finish. Tied through 14 holes with SMU’s Emily Odwin for the lone qualifying spot in the Final Round, Svedenskiold secured par on Nos. 15-16 and then birdied the 160-yard, par-3 17th hole to break the tie.

She faced a challenge on the 18th hole, finding trouble in the right rough with her tee shot. Though, she recovered with her approach shot to the green and two-putted to save par.

Season Highlights

This season, Svedenskiold has led the Cougars with a 71.93 scoring average, 19 rounds of par or lower, and seven rounds in the 60s.

  • She won individual championships at the Veritex Bank Collegiate (April 7-8, Trinity Forest Golf Club, Dallas) and Riverbend Intercollegiate (March 10-11, Riverbend Country Club, Sugar Land, Texas).
  • She became only the second Cougar,after Leonie Harm,to win multiple tournaments in a single season.
  • Svedenskiold topped the Cougars this season with four Top-Five finishes and five Top-10 showings.
  • She owns the three top scoring averages in Houston single-season history and leads all Cougars with a career 71.72 total.

for Sunday’s third Round, Svedenskiold will compete in a group with Anna Davis (Auburn) and Louisiana Gauthier (Florida Gulf Coast) beginning at 4:02 p.m. (CDT), off No. 10.

Houston’s History at the NCAA Championships

Svedenskiold is the third Cougar to compete as an individual at the NCAA Championships. Leonie Harm qualified for the 2018 and 2016 NCAA Championships, while Karen Fredgaard earned the moast recent invitation in 2021, tying for 28th for the highest individual finish at the nation’s top collegiate event.

With the NCAA Columbus Regional selection this season, Houston has been represented in 10 straight NCAA Regionals dating back to the 2015 season, with team appearances in nine of the last 10 years.
