India Set to Compete at World Athletics Relays 2025 in Guangzhou
India is preparing to send a 14-member squad to the World Athletics Relays 2025, which will be held in Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China, on May 10 and 11. The competition promises high stakes, serving as a crucial qualifying event for the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo this September.
Relay Events and India’s Focus
The World Athletics relays Guangzhou 25 will feature six relay events,showcasing a diverse range of athletic talent. These include:
- Men’s 4x400m
- Men’s 4x100m
- Women’s 4x400m
- Women’s 4x100m
- Mixed 4x400m
- Mixed 4x100m
Though, India will strategically focus its efforts on the men’s and mixed 4x400m events, aiming to secure qualification for the World Athletics Championships.
Mixed 4x100m Debut and Global participation
A notable addition to this year’s competition is the mixed 4x100m relay, which will be contested at the World Relays for the first time. This event promises to add an exciting new dimension to the competition.
The event will draw meaningful international participation, with approximately 730 athletes from 43 countries expected to compete.Each nation is permitted to enter one team per event, with a maximum of eight athletes listed per team.
Qualifying for Tokyo 2025
The World Athletics Relays Guangzhou 25 is more than just a competition; it’s a pathway to the World Athletics Championships 2025 in Tokyo. The stakes are high, with qualification spots on the line.
The top 14 teams in each event, with the exception of the mixed 4x100m relay, will automatically qualify for the Tokyo 25 World championships. In Tokyo, 16 teams will compete in each relay event.
The remaining two spots will be persistent based on the top performance lists during the qualification window, which spans from Feb. 25, 2024, to Aug.24,2025.
