La Nación / From today the bivalent vaccine is available in vaccination centers

As of today, Tuesday, January 31, the annual booster vaccine, Moderna bivalent, is now available at vaccination centers in Asunción, Central and in other health regions, nationwide, as announced by the Ministry of Public Health. In this sense, they explained that the annual booster is for people aged 18 and over and pregnant women with 12 weeks or more of gestation (submit a medical certificate with signature and seal).

Regarding the interval of application, we speak of 4 months after completing the primary regimen (first and second dose) or 6 months after the last booster dose (third or fourth dose), regardless of the platform received. In this way, Paraguay reinforces its Annual Vaccination Plan against COVID-19 with the arrival of the new bivalent vaccines, which are designed to improve the body’s defenses against the disease.

All persons over 18 years of age will be able to access the bivalent vaccine, whose application will be carried out once a year within the National Immunization Program. They are called “bivalent” because they allow the immune system to create antibodies against two different variants of the COVID-19 virus (Wuhan and omicron).

Regarding the serious adverse effects that these new vaccines could cause, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates in an advisory regarding the updated bivalent vaccines (from Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna) that there is no increased risk of ischemic strokes.

Because of this, the CDC says it is not recommending any changes to vaccination practices at this time and that the risks posed by COVID-19 to older adults continue to outweigh any potential safety concerns with the vaccine.
