On Thursday 25 May, 18-year-old Aurora Sky Castner could throw the characteristic headgear in the air and celebrate finishing school.
The 18-year-old graduated from Conroe High School in the Greater Houston area of Texas with nothing but top grades.
Born in the state prison
According to the local news channel, she was taken out of prison by her father, after her mother had given birth.
The great achievement is now mentioned in several of the country’s biggest news websites.
In Castner’s essay, which was part of her application to the Ivy League, she caught the school’s attention from the first sentence:
“I was born in prison.”
– Born into poverty
Mona Hamby says that Castner has received a full scholarship from Harvard. The plan is to study law.
Hamby and Castner met through a school-based mentoring program which aims to provide students with meaningful relationships. The mentors will help the young people to navigate at school and in life, says the programme website.
According to KTVU, Hamby writes on Instagram that the 18-year-old has dreamed of Harvard since primary school.
“The girl set herself the goal of going to Harvard when she was in elementary school – despite being born into poverty,” the mentor writes proudly.
She tells the Houston Chronicle that Castner already excelled as a little girl.
– I got a sheet where it said that her hero was Rosa Parks, her favorite food was tacos from Dairy Queen, and she loved to read books. I thought she seemed like a smart little girl. I mean the same today, she says to the newspaper.
Met my mother as a 14-year-old
Castner says she is grateful to her mentor, who has not only helped her with schooling, but also the little things like hairdressing lessons and vision tests.
– Everything Mona has taught me has been very valuable, in the same way that everything I went through before I met Mona has been valuable, says the 18-year-old to the Houston Chronicle, and says that she has only met her mother once in her life.
Dagbladet has contacted Aurora Sky Castner for a comment, but has not yet received a reply to the inquiry.
