Zimbabwe Ferry Disaster: Death Toll Rises to 80 After Lake Kariba Capsizing

August 16, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Lake Kariba Ferry Capsizes, Killing 80

At least 80 people are confirmed dead after an overloaded ferry capsized on Lake Kariba, the massive reservoir straddling the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. Rescue teams are currently scouring the water for those who were aboard when the vessel encountered fatal difficulties.

Fatal Overcrowding on Government Vessel

The death toll has climbed steadily as recovery efforts progress. While initial reports from the disaster management agency and local outlets like ABC News suggested fewer casualties, police updates cited by Reuters and eNCA have confirmed 80 fatalities.

The ferry, operated by a government agency, was officially carrying at least 114 adult passengers and five crew members. However, authorities warn that the official manifest is likely incomplete; children under the age required for ticketing were often omitted from counts. State broadcaster ZBC has confirmed that children are among the deceased. Designed for a maximum capacity of 90, the vessel was significantly overloaded at the time of the sinking.

Warnings Ignored Before Departure

The ferry served as a primary transport link for rural communities traveling to the town of Kariba. Mutsa Murombedzi, a local member of Parliament, released video footage captured just before the vessel’s departure. The clip shows onlookers voicing clear alarm about the ferry’s ability to handle the lake’s strong waves.

Lake Kariba, the world’s largest man-made lake by volume, was created between the late 1950s and early 1960s by damming the Zambezi River. The waterway is formidable, spanning over 200 kilometers in length and reaching widths of up to 40 kilometers.

Recovery Efforts Amidst Uncertainty

The disaster management agency reported that 77 people were rescued in the immediate aftermath of the capsizing. Despite this, police have not released updated figures regarding the total number of injured or missing individuals.

Officials have yet to provide a definitive statement on the cause of the accident or the status of any formal investigation into the vessel’s operational standards. For now, the recovery of bodies from the lake remains the singular priority for local authorities.
