ZANU PF shifts Congress to 2029 and backs President Mnangagwa to 2030 in Chinhoyi

Ruling party delegates gathered in Chinhoyi endorsed President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain party leader until 2030 and designated him as the presidential candidate for the next elections, the Herald reported. During the closing session, Zanu PF National Chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri received a certificate of attendance from Secretary-General Jacob Mudenda.

Aligning party rules with national constitutional amendments

Secretary for Legal Affairs Ziyambi Ziyambi told delegates that the party must amend its internal constitution to match the national legal framework. The 23rd National People’s Conference resolved to push the elective Congress from its original 2027 schedule out to 2029.

Conference resolved that we change our electoral cycle. We recall that we were due to have a Congress next year but, because of the constitutional amendment that happened, we agreed that Congress will be in 2029.

Ziyambi explained following the proceedings. NewZimbabwe.com noted that the postponement aims to harmonise internal provisions with the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment Number 3 Act, which extended the term.

Provincial chairpersons affirm grassroots backing

Provincial leaders took turns during the conference to report that the decisions originated from consultations held across cell, branch, and district structures. Mashonaland West provincial chairperson Mary Mliswa-Chikoka stated that her province followed the party’s constitutional procedures through meetings held from the grassroots up to the provincial level. Harare provincial chairperson Godwills Masimirembwa pointed to a shift in international relations under the current administration, telling delegates that the nation has moved away from isolation toward broader diplomatic engagement.

Mashonaland Central chairperson Kazembe Kazembe cited economic stabilisation and improved passport access as key achievements noted by local supporters. Other provincial heads, including Robson Mavenyengwa of Masvingo and Mangaliso Ndlovu of Matabeleland South, confirmed that grassroots members overwhelmingly favored continuity.

President Mnangagwa calls for measurable economic results

Addressing the closing session at the Chinhoyi University of Technology, 84-year-old party leader Emmerson Mnangagwa emphasized that the administration is shifting focus from promises to performance.

This accomplishment, along with the outcomes of conference, as stipulated in the resolutions, demonstrates that ZANU PF is not an ordinary organisation. We are a juggernaut that can never be stopped.

Mnangagwa stated. He directed government ministries and agencies to implement conference resolutions with strict timelines and measurable outcomes targeting youth, women, SMEs, and health delivery. He further stated:

ZANU PF yaita chisungo kuno, ku Mashonaland West Province, kuti budiriro yataona pasi pe Second Republic, irikuenderera mberi.
