Zafferana Etnea gastronomy fined 3,000 euros during Ottobrata festival

Zafferana Etnea gastronomy fined 3,000 euros during Ottobrata festival

October 26, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Joint inspections during the Ottobrata Zafferanese festival in Zafferana Etnea resulted in 3,000 euros in administrative fines and specific prescriptions issued to an unnamed local gastronomy business.

  • Joint enforcement operations by Carabinieri, NAS inspectors, and ASP health technicians targeted food safety and hygiene compliance during a high-traffic regional festival.
  • Inspections at an undisclosed gastronomy business uncovered sanitation deficiencies and failures in mandated food safety self-control procedures.
  • Financial penalties totaled 3,000 euros alongside mandatory corrective prescriptions, while labor audits verified employment documentation for nine workers on site.

Joint Task Force Inspections at Zafferana Etnea Festival

The coordinated enforcement action took place on a Sunday morning during the autumn festival in Zafferana Etnea, a well-known autumn event that each year draws numerous visitors to Zafferana Etnea from all over Sicily and from other parts of Italy. Participating agencies included the Carabinieri Company of Giarre, the Carabinieri Anti-Adulteration and Health Unit (NAS) from Catania, the Guardia di Finanza from Acireale, and technical personnel from the Provincial Health Authority (ASP) of Catania.

Hygiene Violations Lead to 3,000 Euro Fine

During the inspection of the unnamed gastronomy establishment, ASP technicians and NAS military personnel identified specific non-compliance issues. According to the documented findings, the business exhibited hygiene and sanitation shortcomings alongside a failure to properly execute internal self-control procedures required to maintain food safety standards. These violations led to the issuance of 3,000 euros in administrative penalties and strict prescriptions requiring the operators to restore regulatory compliance.

Inspectors Verify Employment Status of Nine Workers

Alongside the food safety assessments, the Guardia di Finanza executed checks regarding the employment status of staff members working inside the establishment. Inspectors identified nine workers present on the premises. Out of that total, six individuals were found to be regularly registered and inquadered. Authorities initiated further administrative checks for the remaining three workers to definitively establish their respective employment positions.

Ottobrata Prevention System Protects Public Health

The inspection activity was part of a broader prevention system set up for the Ottobrata, aimed at safeguarding public health, ensuring visitor safety, and verifying compliance with regulations by economic operators engaged in hospitality and food service. Such checks assume particular importance during events characterized by a heavy influx of people, when the increase in attendance and consumption makes it necessary to pay greater attention to the hygienic conditions of the premises where food is prepared and served. The objective is to crack down on irregularities, protect consumers and workers, and guarantee fair competition among economic operators.
