Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal opens hearing and balance lab

October 26, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

The Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal inaugurated a specialized research facility on Monday, dedicated to the simultaneous study of age-related hearing loss and vestibular disorders. Installed at the institution’s research centre, the Laboratoire Reconnecter – Famille Joly stands as Canada’s first infrastructure built specifically to examine the combined impacts of these sensory deficits on older adults.

Key Clinical Takeaways:

  • Canada’s first combined auditory and vestibular research facility opened at the Institut universitaire de gériatrie de Montréal on Monday.
  • The facility was made possible by a 630,000-dollar donation from a Quebec family to study the intersection of hearing loss, balance, and cognitive decline in seniors.
  • Researchers aim to determine whether sensory decline shares a common underlying mechanism with dementia or actively accelerates cognitive impairment through social isolation.

The Intersection of Sensory Loss and Cognitive Decline

Age-related hearing loss, medically known as presbyacusis, affects roughly one in three adults aged 65 and older, with that proportion rising to one in two by age 75, according to data from the Institut de gériatrie. When these auditory impairments coincide with vestibular dysfunction, the consequences for daily functioning multiply. Such overlapping deficits can undermine an older adult’s physical autonomy, restrict movement, provoke social isolation, and heighten the risk of falls and dementia.

François Champoux, co-director of the new laboratory and a researcher specializing in the neuroscience of aging, noted that hearing loss triggers physical changes within the brain. Until now, investigating these shifts has proven difficult due to funding constraints and a lack of specialized equipment. He explained that public perception often reduces hearing impairment to a simple need for louder speech, obscuring broader connections to cognitive health, mobility, and community participation.

Unifying Fragmented Studies Across Canada

Historically, scientific investigations into perception, physical action, cognition, and social participation have occurred in isolation across different Canadian research centres. The Laboratoire Reconnecter – Famille Joly seeks to bridge these gaps by studying all these elements simultaneously within the same individual. Co-directed alongside Professor Adriana Lacerda—with both researchers holding the Fondation Caroline Durand Chair in Hearing and Aging—the facility intends to untangle complex relationships that have largely eluded researchers, such as the persistent statistical link between hearing loss and accidental falls in older populations.

While numerous epidemiological studies associate diminished hearing with cognitive decline, the precise underlying biological pathways remain disputed. Champoux questioned whether preventing auditory decline can directly stave off cognitive deterioration, pointing out that both phenomena might instead stem from a shared underlying pathological mechanism. Uncovering this dynamic could fundamentally reshape clinical interventions for aging populations.

Funding and Community Support

The creation of the research facility was made possible by a 630,000-dollar philanthropic gift from a Quebec family. This financial backing provides the necessary equipment to evaluate multiple facets of sensory and cognitive health at once, offering researchers the capacity to observe how sensory systems interact inside a single patient.
