Android Devices Get AI Boost with Google’s Gemini
As Samsung Unpacked unfolds, **Google** is introducing substantial AI enhancements across the Android platform, with Samsung devices set to be the first to experience them. Wearable tech is receiving a significant upgrade, and most Android devices will gain new capabilities.
Gemini Integration for Wear OS
Starting today, select Wear OS watches, including those from **Samsung**, **Pixel**, **OnePlus**, **Oppo**, and **Xiaomi**, will feature Gemini integration mirroring that of smartphones. This provides a more intuitive, hands-free method to access necessary information. Users can activate Gemini by saying, “Hey Google”
, pressing and holding the side button, or tapping the Gemini icon.
For instance, **Google** suggests using Gemini for assistance with recipes while cooking, quick weather updates before leaving, or schedule updates between meetings. You can also chain complex tasks, like sending apologies for lateness or navigating to appointments. According to Statista, the global smartwatch market is projected to reach $58.64 billion in 2024, highlighting the increasing demand for such integrated features (Statista).
Enhanced Circle to Search Capabilities
Circle to Search on Android is gaining two new features. First, the addition of AI Mode’s reasoning and multimodal capabilities. Second, gaming assistance. For players needing help with a level, character identification, or gameplay guidance, a “Get Game Help”
chip will appear when Circle to Search is activated, attaching a screenshot specific to the game’s point.
Gemini Live for Foldable Devices
Beginning with the **Galaxy Z Flip 7**, foldable phones will see significant improvements to Gemini Live. This includes access from the external screen and utilizing Gemini Live for environmental information.
For example, **Google** notes that users can tap the camera button and switch their **Galaxy X Flip 7** to Flex Mode for hands-free DIY project pointers or yoga form advice. The **Galaxy Z Flip 7** FlexWindow facilitates last-minute outfit advice or styling assistance for new glasses without needing to open the phone.
Expanded Gemini Live App Support
Gemini Live will now support more apps, initially including **Samsung** apps like Calendar, Notes, and Reminders, with plans to add support for other device manufacturers’ apps.
The Gemini rollout on wearables targets any Android device using Wear OS 4+ (**Galaxy Watch8** is slated to be the first with Wear OS 6). The Circle to Search updates are coming to the broader Android ecosystem on compatible devices, as is Gemini Live’s expansion to foldables.
