Harry Ford, currently with the Washington Nationals, is poised to become a key player for Great Britain in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, marking his second appearance in the tournament. Ford previously distinguished himself in the 2023 Classic as the youngest player to hit a home run, a feat accomplished at the age of 20 years and 19 days during a game against Canada at Chase Field in Phoenix.
Ford’s record-breaking home run wasn’t the only youthful power display in that game. Canada’s Owen Caissie also connected for a home run at 20 years and 247 days, briefly holding the record before Ford’s subsequent hit. Prior to the 2023 tournament, the youngest home run hitter in World Baseball Classic history was Jonathan Schoop, who achieved the milestone in 2013 at 21 years and 140 days.
The participation of young prospects like Ford in the World Baseball Classic is often subject to restrictions imposed by their Major League Baseball teams. Teams are cautious about exposing developing players to the high level of competition present in the Classic, preferring a more gradual progression through the minor league system. Ford debuted with the Seattle Mariners last season before being traded to the Nationals.
While Jazz Chisholm Jr., of the Yankees, leads the British squad, Ford is considered one of the team’s most prominent players. The finalized pools for the 2026 World Baseball Classic have been established, with Great Britain among the participating nations. The tournament is scheduled to begin in March.
Venezuela’s participation in the 2026 World Baseball Classic remains uncertain, according to reports.
