Woman Faces Charges After Forest Fire Ignited Following Woodland Toilet Break
VÄSTERVIK, Sweden – A young woman is facing prosecution for general carelessness after a fire she inadvertently started during a bathroom break in the forest near helgerum, Västervik municipality, spread to burn an area roughly the size of half a football pitch. The incident, which occurred in July, highlighted “extremely high fire risk” conditions across Sweden at the time, according to Sweden’s Radio.
The woman, who has outdoor life training, reportedly lit toilet paper on fire after relieving herself in the woods, and the flames quickly spread from a bush. Despite attempts by her companions to extinguish the blaze, the fire escalated, prompting a response from the local rescue service.Authorities noted the potential for a much larger forest fire, given the proximity of buildings and power lines.
During questioning, the woman admitted to the act, stating, “I didn’t think about it,” as reported by Västerviks-Tidningen. The rescue service confirmed the fire was successfully contained, but warned of the significant danger posed by the initial outbreak.
